Part 1 –
Get a Life
Coming mostly from Romans 6:4-6, this initial episode affirms that Christ is the model for sanctification, and the natural application of the resurrection of Christ to everyday life is the vigilant pursuit of His life. Identification with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ leads to walking “in the newness of life.” While the passage mostly addresses the Christian hope of physical resurrection, our future resurrection is foreshadowed by regeneration and subsequent embrace of the life of Christ. Sanctification largely corresponds to the realization that “the flesh profits nothing” (John 6:63) and needs to die–hence we unite ourselves to Christ in the likeness of His death. This self-mortification clears the way for the life of Christ to become more prevalent, as we progressively walk more and more in the newness of life.

More About This Episode -

Victor introduces the question of how to apply the resurrection of Christ, particularly in light of Easter celebrations. He explains the significance of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, emphasizing that Christ’s death was necessary for the forgiveness of sins and that the resurrection proves that our sin debt has been paid. He connects this to 1 Corinthians 15, highlighting that without the resurrection, we would still be in our sins.

Victor discusses Romans 6, describing how believers who are baptized into Christ Jesus share in his death and resurrection. He emphasizes the importance of walking in the newness of life, which involves a process of sanctification where believers submit their lives to the lordship of Christ and consistently put to death the old self.

He stresses that sanctification is not merely avoiding sin but living out of the Spirit of Christ’s power. Victor shares a personal example from his brother’s life, indicating that despite apparent outward victories over sin, true empowerment comes from an active prayer life and abiding in Christ.

As he concludes, Victor reiterates the importance of acknowledging our spiritual poverty and the necessity of uniting ourselves with Christ’s work on the cross. He highlights that recognizing our inability to achieve any spiritual fruit on our own is crucial in experiencing the newness of life through God’s Spirit.

Victor concludes by reiterating that while discipline may not feel joyful at the moment, it yields positive results when embraced. He encourages everyone to make straight paths for their feet, acknowledging that cooperation with God’s disciplining hand is crucial for spiritual healing and growth.
