Part 18 –
Fawning after God and His Law
This episode spells out how the cultivation of love of God and His Law is the means of gaining victory over the flesh. This love is metaphorically captured in Psalm 42:1: “as the deer pants for the water brook, so my soul pants for Thee, oh God.” Victory over the flesh is not found in merely knowing about God and His Law, but victory manifests when we PANT after God and His Law. It becomes an insatiable craving. New Testament believers, who delight with the Law of God in the inner man, can potentially have substantial victory over the flesh by setting their minds on the Spirit. (Romans 8:6) This is key to falling in love with God and His Law. And it also makes sanctification much easier. When God and His Law become our delight, His commandments are not burdensome, and crushing the deeds of the flesh becomes instinctive and natural. We pant after God and His commandments, and we do anything to satisfy our thirst.

More About This Episode -

Victor begins the episode by addressing a question about how to apply Psalm 119 to everyday Christian life, specifically focusing on Psalm 119:131, which expresses a longing for God’s commandments. He draws a parallel to Psalm 42, illustrating the deep desire for God that believers should have, much like a deer panting for water.

He highlights a prevailing issue in the modern Christian church: the failure to appreciate God’s laws and commandments, despite being born again believers with the Holy Spirit. Victor discusses Romans 7, where Paul describes the struggle between flesh and spirit, emphasizing that many believers misunderstand this struggle and feel defeated.

Victor clarifies that Romans 8:2 offers hope, stating that believers are set free from the law of sin and death through the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. He explains that if believers do not accept this victory, they will struggle to love God’s law fully, as they see themselves perpetually at war with their flesh.

Victor stresses that embracing the victory outlined in Romans 8:2 allows believers to delight in God’s law genuinely and fosters a desire to pursue God, akin to a deer seeking water amid dangers. He insists that God’s commandments should not be seen as burdensome but rather as the way to a fulfilling life.

The discussion further explores the idea that many people mistakenly believe God’s law restricts their joy. Instead, Victor articulates that true fulfillment and joy come from delighting in God’s law and pursuing it passionately. He encourages listeners to set their minds on the things of the Spirit, which will result in life and peace.
