Part 3 –
Not Growing–Are You Blind and Short-sighted?
This episode mostly deals with the believer’s response to the gift of divine power in 2 Pet. 1:5-8. Resting on God’s divine power, Christians should excel in 9 moral attributes, among them are moral excellence, self-control, and love. Peter concludes that those lacking these qualities are “blind or shortsighted, having forgotten the purification from their former sins.” Peter’s understanding of the gospel that saves is much more than mere forgiveness of sins, so he likely had much more than mere forgiveness in mind when he refers to “purification.” Peter includes the endgame of salvation in both 1 Pet. 1:2 and 1 Pet. 4:1-2, which is obedience and living for the will of God. Believers who apparently see “purification from their former sins” simply in terms of forgiveness, have missed the holistic emphasis of the gospel: God saves us FROM the penalty of sin FOR the will of God. Peter consequently assesses that Christians who only got half the message are “blind and short-sighted.” Christians should therefore honestly assess whether their lack of spiritual growth is due to a misunderstanding of the constitution, how things work in the Kingdom: growth in obedience to the will of God is the clear expectation of the gospel.

More About This Episode -

In this episode of “Kingdom Questions,” hosted by Victor Vigorito, the focus is on how to start the new year with a view towards spiritual growth and a deeper Christian life. Victor emphasizes the importance of understanding and utilizing God’s divine power for a productive Christian life, referencing the second epistle of Peter from the Bible. He explains that according to Peter, God has given all necessary tools for life and godliness through His divine power.

Victor discusses how, based on God’s actions, Peter lists several virtues Christians should develop such as moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. He highlights that lacking these qualities can make a believer blind or shortsighted, which Peter correlates with forgetting the purification from one’s sins. This metaphorical blindness or shortsightedness, according to Victor, refers to losing sight of the purpose of their salvation and focusing solely on forgiveness without considering the obligation to live a life according to God’s will.

Exploring deeper, Victor debates the broader meaning of the purification from sins, which he argues isn’t just about forgiveness but a profound transformation that aligns a person’s life towards God’s will and purpose. He uses further scriptural references from both Peter and Hebrews to suggest that the ultimate goal of salvation is obedience and service to God, not just receiving forgiveness.

Victor deepens this discussion by explaining that the real fruit of understanding one’s salvation is living life no longer for personal desires but for the will of God. He proposes that understanding this can help believers develop the qualities Peter mentions, thus avoiding the spiritual blindness of forgetting the transformative aim of their faith.
